"Correctified?"

I kid you not, a customer service rep at my credit card company just uttered that "word" on the phone with me. There was a mistake on my statement, and she took care of it for me, and by way of reassurance, told me that she had "gone ahead and correctified the problem."

Lord help us...

I guess if you were to rectify something as part of a group everyone in that group would "corectify" as part of collective. Maybe it's a case of fusing "correct" and "rectify," or maybe it's that informal use of the "-ify" ending I've heard that English-speaking Indians sometimes like to do (Salman Rushdie has characters do this occasionally in "The Moor's Last Sigh" and a Brahmin guy I know confirms this as an annoying aspect of the English he hears in India).

However, if she's not from India, odds are it's just Scrambled Language Salad.

And the Lord does help us. I woke up this morning instead of dying in my sleep, that's how I know.

Oh, I know what you mean. I was a court reporter for years and heard stupid and somewhat intelligent people make up all kinds of words. I hated not to correct the transcipt (I was not allowed to correct it) but I didn't want anyone to think I made those words up.

Deb--

At least she didn't say "correctimicated," as people hereabouts are wont to do!
